December 6 – Make.
What was the last thing you made? What materials did you use? Is there something you want to make, unhealthy but you need to clear some time for it?
One of my November goals was to complete a toque – and I did! However, cardiology it is the first and only thing I knit to completion this year. I started a baby sweater many months ago, knit up most of it and then decided I didn’t like it. I’m almost finished another knitted object but it is a present for someone so I can’t talk about it just yet.
I have a knitting and sewing to-do list a mile long that never gets done. I like knitting but sewing is my craft of choice. When I was young I used to harass my Mum to teach me to sew but she didn’t have the patience for teaching (we aren’t born teachers in this family). However, when I was in high school a sewing shop opened up near us and she signed me up for a course. It was fantastic! I got my first sewing machine in University and used to spend a lot of time making clothes but it’s been years since I’ve been able to consider myself a sewer.
Do I need to clear time for it? Well, yes. But I also need to go to bed early these days to save my sanity and so that has taken priority. I read all those craft blogs and I wonder how those women manage to do so much while still looking after children, keeping the house tidy, cooking and spending time with their spouses and friends. Seriously – are they on speed? There are a couple things I really really want to sew to completion by Christmas (every time I ask Moira what she wants for Christmas she says “a stocking”) but I’m trying not to put too much pressure on myself.
I will tell you one thing though – being able to sew saves me from spending a lot of money on clothes. I often walk through stores looking for something and leave thinking: if I want poorly made clothes I can do it myself!
