I am so very very far behind…
Reverse Trick-or-Treating - ever heard of it? This is only the second year but it’s a pretty cool concept.
A pleasant surprise will greet nearly a quarter million people distributing candy at their door, prosthesis when youth reverse the Halloween tradition to hand adults a sample of Fair Trade chocolate.
The chocolate will be accompanied by a card informing recipients of poverty and child slavery in the cocoa industry, check affecting mainstream candy enjoyed at Halloween and around the year, and how Fair Trade Certified chocolate provides a solution.
It sounds rather pretentious but I think the organizers have their heart in the right place. Chocolate is a multi-billion dollar industry and cocoa farmers live in some of the poorest conditions in the world.
- 284,000 children toil in abusive labor conditions in West Africa’s cocoa field.
- Cocoa companies pay prices so low that many cocoa farmers cannot meet their families’ basic needs
p.s. October is Fair Trade month.
p.p.s I originally wrote chocolate farmers which immediately put visions of Fruit and Nut Bar orchards into my mind.
